🔗 Share this article An Account of Unexpected Kindness: The Time a University Student Let Me Stay on Her Dormitory Floor During the year 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. My plan was to arrange a place to stay upon arrival, however once I got there, a major event was in town and all the budget hostels and affordable lodging had no vacancies. Coming from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could bed down in the terminal – only to discover that airport, unlike Singapore’s, does not operate all night. Not knowing how to proceed and growing worried, I caught a bus into town and found myself drifting towards the casino, reasoning I might spend those hours somewhere that stayed open 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the best shape for nailing an interview the next morning, yet, as a broke student, a pricey hotel was out of reach. The world needs more people who show such kindness. It seems I seemed lost because a young woman saw me wandering around the city and wondered if I was OK. I recounted the story of my accommodation crisis and without hesitation she offered I could sleep on the ground at her university residence at the Australian National University – an ideal turn of events, as that’s where my interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering some food: one of the stuffed baguettes she had from her evening job. I was able to use warm shower facilities and somewhere safe and secure to spend the night. Looking back, I now understand the significant risk she took being a woman allowing a guy she had only just encountered stay in her room. In those days I was in a bubble of male privilege and did not consider about things like that. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she offered that help – and remain incredibly thankful. Ultimately, I did not attending the Australian National University, and I never saw that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me that incredible gesture of generosity. It is my wish karma has rewarded her act of kindness many times over. Our society requires more individuals with such compassion.
