Blasts and Low-Altitude Planes Witnessed in Venezuelan Capital City Caracas

Reports circulated of numerous explosions and the roar of low-altitude aircraft in the Venezuelan capital in the pre-dawn hours of the weekend. This situation has prompted accusations from the Venezuelan leadership and demands for international scrutiny.

Caracas Accuses US of Attack

The socialist regime has condemned the United States of committing "foreign aggression," claiming that ex- President Trump supposedly ordered attacks against the Latin American state. In an official statement, the authorities confirmed that attacks had impacted Caracas and several other states: Miranda, La Guaira state, and Aragua.

"The primary goal of these strikes is to take control of Venezuela's strategic resources, notably its oil and mineral wealth," the statement asserted.

Caracas called on the world to censure the strikes, which it termed a "clear infringement of international law" that put countless of civilians in danger.

Accounts of Blasts and Military Sites Hit

Residents reported hearing at least seven detonations around 2:00 AM local time. Citizens in different areas reportedly ran into the open.

"The earth trembled. This is horrible. We heard blasts and planes in the distance," said one witness.

Plumes of smoke was seen rising from key defense sites in Caracas: the La Carlota airbase military airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna military base, where president Maduro is believed to have a residence.

Global Response

The leader of bordering Colombia, wrote on a social platform that "Currently they are striking Venezuela... bombing it with projectiles." He demanded an swift emergency meeting of the Security Council.

The Colombian government, which recently became a member of the UNSC, stated it would activate defense measures at its border with its neighbor.

Context

These alleged attacks come after a extended campaign of pressure by the United States against the Maduro regime. Beginning in August, there has been a significant American military buildup off Venezuela's Caribbean coast and a number of strikes on boats suspected of illegal activities.

The government has stated "a state of emergency" and commanded all national defence plans to be implemented. It has also urged its citizens to mobilize and "reject this external attack."

American officials and the Pentagon have not publicly addressed inquiries for comment regarding the reports.
