Gamers Are Receiving a Fresh Title in the Best Star Wars Series in History, Helmed by a Mass Effect Veteran.

The galaxy far, far away aficionados are hardly bereft of options when it comes to excellent gaming adventures showcasing lightsabers, but the universe envisioned by George Lucas is more than a playground for conflict. Few series have understood this as well as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was forged in the traditional computer role-playing game vein that made studios like Obsidian and BioWare famous. Now, after a number of fits and starts, a major gaming showcase has announced that fans will soon be able to experience a spiritual follow-up to the series. It's called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.

The Major Announcement

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is touted as "an upcoming single-player narrative-driven action RPG and successor in spirit to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." Veteran developer Casey Hudson, formerly of BioWare and the director of the original KOTOR, is at the helm at Arcanaut Studios.

“When we developed the original KOTOR, we wanted to forge a ultimate Star Wars experience — designing an adventure that was made of all the things we longed to doing as Star Wars fans,” Hudson explained. “Now, 25 years after we first conceived that game, our ambitions are equally ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic presents an opportunity to explore a contemporary vision of a ultimate Star Wars experience, using cutting-edge technology and game design, and an completely original story crafted specifically to deliver on the fusion of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the center of KOTOR.”

A Welcome Surprise

The reveal is a bit of a unexpected development, given that 2022 saw a modern attempt at an Old Republic game get delayed indefinitely. However, industry whispers had suggested that a reimagining of KotOR, as well as one of its follow-up, had been under development as recently as March 2025.

Here is the summary for the new title:

Developed by Arcanaut Studios in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Led by Casey Hudson, Game director of the original Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, the team of veteran game developers and storytellers at Arcanaut Studios is crafting an epic interactive adventure across a galaxy on the brink of rebirth where every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness. Fate is in your hands.

The Legacy of KOTOR

The iconic role-playing games, which have seen recent ports to platforms like the Switch, are famous for their conversation-rich, player-influenced, and stat-imbued approach to Star Wars. The games were seminal enough that they unintentionally established how people visualize the Old Republic era as a whole, to this day. The games dared to question many beliefs of Jedi lore that are often seen as absolute, like whether the group and its understanding of the Force are right. The second game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, went in a considerably bleaker direction by inviting players to consider if the world might not be wiser without the Jedi at all. Both games are revered by fans long after their release, but the follow-up in particular is viewed by many as one of the greatest pieces of Star Wars media ever made.

The Future is Bright

And now, a few years after seeing a atmospheric trailer for a Knights of the Old Republic remake, we're finally getting another game in the comparable style. Given the demand for deep games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin, a modern approach on Knights of the Old Republic that's done well has the potential to be incredibly popular.
