The McLaren driver edged out fellow driver and championship contender the Australian for the top spot in the dying seconds of the practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The British racer, who took the points lead from his teammate by a single point after taking the win in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, topped the Melbourne-born driver by a mere 0.023s. Earlier in the session, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair throughout the hour before the sprint shootout due at 6:30 PM GMT. Max Verstappen, the other racer in the championship fight, trailing 36 points behind Norris, ended up in P17 as his Red Bull team ran a unique setup. Verstappen's team-mate the Japanese driver was the only driver to have an incident, if briefly, when he spun at corner four soon after starting. The Japanese slid over the exit kerbs before sliding over the run-off area, and was blessed to escape with just a minor contact of the wall. The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also lost it, at the conclusion of the practice, turning around through the quick descending corner approaching the last turn on to the start-finish straight. The seven-time champion finished practice in 19th, trailing teammate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren drivers were well clear of the rest of the field, with Nico Hulkenberg's car P3, 0.619 seconds behind Piastri's best. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto in front of the Mercedes of George Russell and Alpine's Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
