The pace bowler added to the injury concerns plaguing England after leaving the playing area during Saturday's play of the Boxing Day Test in the Ashes series. The right-arm seamer experienced discomfort in his left hamstring post-delivery of the fourth over during the morning session. Team management stated Atkinson had experienced "tightness" and would spend time away from the action for further assessment "over the next few hours". The final Test of the series in Sydney begins this coming Sunday. The visitors have already lost strike bowlers one seamer due to knee trouble and Jofra Archer to a side strain on the current trip. A replacement bowler was added to the party as injury reinforcement. The seamer had a tough time in the opening two Tests, claiming a mere a handful of scalps. He was dropped of the third Test, only to be brought back for the Boxing Day match as Archer's replacement. Atkinson performed better in the fourth Test, taking two wickets with the ball, before adding 28 while batting among just a trio of England players who passed ten runs. After bowling one over in Australia's second innings, he resumed for the second day's play and had nightwatchman Scott Boland caught behind. However, at the end of that over, he bowled a slower ball to Travis Head and suddenly grabbed for his hamstring. Atkinson was recalled for the fourth Ashes Test having missed of the third.
