That Gory Animated Movie Ending That Haunts Viewers

Out of every mature cartoon movies I’ve ever viewed, no other has remained with me as much as the terror-laced ending of the explicitly bloody and highly provocative 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.

In 2015’s, the Spanish writer-director created a dark, somber , frequently brutal world that included several minor , forlorn hints of hope.

While Unicorn Wars seems like it came from an impulse to expand animation even more, the filmmaker clarified that it was more a try to express a global, multicultural message concerning “the mutual source of each battle.”

This theme is conveyed via a squad of brightly hued teddy bears , obviously modeled after a well-known series of cuddly characters.

Being raised in a community focused on warmongering as well as the defense industry, many of these creatures are obsessed with slaughtering unicorns, due to a religious scripture that tells the bears they previously were kings of the woods, until these creatures forced them out.

A few have not completely bought into the indoctrination, and choose to try out substances or mate in the woods.

In contrast to their cuddly equivalents, these colorful critters have visible sexual organs , clear urges.

For a particular particularly cruel, pessimistic creature, Bluey, the war against unicorns transforms into a road toward dominance — and particularly to dominance above his gentler, kinder brother Tubby.

The character behaves aggressively and an obvious psychopath , and as terror takes over his group and claims his teammates one by one, he seizes increasingly influence for himself, through ever more violent, destructive ways.

Simultaneously, the horned creatures are experiencing their own terror, through an expanding, destructive monster in their habitat.

“Initially, it feels like a comedy,” the filmmaker stated. “Yet it turns into a more serious and sorrowful film. And ultimately, it’s a horror film.”

The Unicorn Wars begins similar to one of the most playful films by a renowned animator, that uncover a naughty glee in permitting drawn beings curse, engage in violence, or engage sexually.

Afterward it evolves into something more like a bleaker film by that same director, featuring progressively visual gore and a noticeable connection to the real tragedy of battle.

In the finale, it becomes an outright theatrical horror bloodbath.

The fear that turns this a Halloween-friendly viewing begins well before than indicated.

Unicorn Wars is one for the devoted gorehounds, for lovers of intense movies who desire to see something they’ve never seen on-screen before, and are able to withstand a narrative which delivers absolutely no punches.

See it in a dimly lit space with no disturbances, and the finale will dig into your mind and stay with you.
