Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a armed takeover in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.
