While perhaps not at the same level as pardoning holiday birds, but the county's top official had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven. Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood. “This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a new presidential term. “Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from concern.” The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House. The swine, provided by a local firefighter, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six seven” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so widespread that a major dictionary recently declared “6-7” its top term for the year. A New Life The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release. “This swine clemency has become a cherished method to begin the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message. “It embodies the essence of Miami: vibrant, varied, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Every time, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.” Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and cafecito as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
